Throughout Queensland many people are turning to greener energy to provide heat and hot water for their homes because of the substantial savings that can be made on energy bills. However, a lot of people don’t want to make that investment and stay with the conventional heating and hot water systems Brisbane homes have used for years.
There is another more important reason to think about changing to green energy and that is the impact on your health. Gas produces toxic fumes, which cause air pollution, both inside and outside your home. If you suffer from respiratory problems, it’s a good idea not to use any gas in your home. Most gas appliances emit some low level toxins and this can have an adverse effect on the health of every household member.
Electricity could be considered a better alternative to gas for your home, but the production of it does impact the environment. The majority of electricity is actually produced by burning fossil fuels, which in turn causes harmful gases that are pumped out into the environment. If we used less electricity, these gases, and their impact on the environment and you, would be reduced.
So, green energy isn’t just about your pocket, it’s also about keeping your family and the planet healthy. With so many green alternatives available, what are the best alternatives to gas and electricity? One solution that works very well in warmer climates, an air source heat pump, is a clean and environmental friendly method of producing heat and hot water. It is easy to install, it lasts for years and it is very energy efficient.
What is an Air Source Heat Pump
A typical air source heat pump is like an air conditioning unit, only bigger. Inside the box there is a large electric fan, which draws in warm air from the outside. Once the air has been drawn in, it is passed through an evaporator which contains a CFC free refrigerant. As the refrigerant is heated by the warm air it changes from liquid to gas inside the pipes. Pressurising the gas to make it even hotter and passing it through a heat exchanger, it flows through pipes in the water tank where it heats the water. Once it has heated the water and cooled, the gas converts back into liquid and is pumped back up to start the process again.
A heat pump hot water system is easy to install and doesn’t need much space. It will fit in the garden, on your patio or, if you live in an apartment, on your balcony. The pipe work needed is minimal and a thermostat inside your home will control the temperature.
Many gas heating and hot water systems produce CFC gas. This gas damages the ozone layer, which protects the earth from the harmful rays of the sun. Holes in the ozone layer allow more ultra violet light to pass through, which can cause cancer, eye diseases and many other serious illnesses. Heat pump hot water systems help the environment because the refrigerant inside is not a CFC gas, and therefore doesn’t cause the greenhouse emissions which can damage the ozone layer.
These systems also produce less Carbon Dioxide (CO2) than other heating appliances, which in itself isn’t harmful and is in fact necessary for plants to produce oxygen. However, if too much is released into our atmosphere, it can contribute to global warming, which is precisely what is happening in our world today.
By using a heat pump for the hot water you need in your home, you are not only saving money, but you are also looking after your health and that of the planet.
